Mantrailing for rescue teams or private
Mantrailing is a search work with dogs in which the dog is trained to detect and follow the specific scent of a person. This activity is used both professionally, such as in the search for missing people, and as a hobby in the sports sector. Here is an explanation of the different uses and sports:
Professional use:
Objective: Mantrailing is used by police, rescue teams and other search and rescue organizations to track down missing people. The dog uses its exceptional nose to pick up the scent of the missing person, which comes from a personal item (such as a piece of clothing), and follow its trail over long distances.
Training: Dogs in professional use undergo intensive training to sharpen their ability to distinguish between odors and to track them even in difficult conditions such as urban areas, changing weather or over long periods of time.
Procedure: The dog is conditioned to the scent at the starting point of the search and then follows the trail left by the evaporation of the human scent in the environment. The handler follows the dog and interprets its behavior to determine the direction and intensity of the trail. Or even to indicate the "absence of a trail"!
Sports trailer:
Goal: Mantrailing as a sport is often practiced by dog owners to keep their dogs mentally and physically active. It is an excellent way to use the dog's natural instincts and promote a strong bond between dog and owner.
Training: For me, training for sport mantrailing is no different from training for operational trailers, it is intensive and structured. Dogs learn to recognize and follow the scent of a person, often in a controlled environment such as a park or rural area.
Procedure: Sport mantrailing often takes place in small groups, where a human leaves a trail and the dog then follows that trail. It can be done at different levels of difficulty, from following a short, fresh trail to more complex and older trails with obstacles such as elevators, fences, doors, etc.
Advantages:
For the dog: Mantrailing offers excellent mental and physical exercise. It challenges the dog and uses its natural abilities, resulting in a happier and more balanced animal. I would say that mantrailing is a high-performance sport for the dog.
For humans: In addition to the joy of training, mantrailing promotes cooperation between dog and owner and strengthens trust and communication between the two. You learn to read your dog, discover completely new sides and enjoy the joy that the dog radiates.
Whether professional or as a sport, mantrailing is a fascinating and rewarding activity that utilizes the special abilities of dogs.
